Australia's captain Set to Play a Key Part in the Ashes

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

The Australian chief selector George Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming Ashes series.

Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series scheduled to begin on November 21 in Perth.

Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about the likelihood of taking part.

"We're aware that time is getting short and multiple considerations involved, aside from the physical problem, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a key capacity. With luck starting in Perth. If not, we'll reassess."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after scans revealed a lower back issue.

Previous incidents include of back injuries, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss several home seasons in four years.

He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the contest.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from the national team for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

He labeled it as a "small issue and stated that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the initial game as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs anyway. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for a short period, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
