Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

England opener Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements from captain Ben Stokes about the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered those words in multiple conversations in the wake of England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes versus the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I required," remarked Stokes.

But, after Crawley made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards went on a break to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he said his team had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their previous three years in charge.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," noted Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do something special entering this Test."

Australia Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday came during a decisive triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant England six down for 207 chasing a notional total of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team require four wickets on the final day to secure an unassailable 3-0 lead after three Tests.

Defeat would prolong England's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes series loss.

This series is set to be decided in just eleven days of cricket – after England fell the initial matches in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," said the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a very, very good team. It was always going to be hard coming here against them. They entered as the front-runners and they've proven why."

Pope's Position In Question

While the opener's performance in Adelaide likely secures questions about his short-term future in the England team, Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in England's second innings on day four, extending his modest returns against Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a half-century and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in Ashes Tests and returned a lower average.

However, the opener said any notion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know how good of a player he is," said he. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is noise externally. There's no discussion like that regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
