British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French warplanes in a joint strike against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the British defence ministry.

The location, identified by intelligence, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was positioned in mountains just north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a number of approach shafts down to the facility... initial indications are that the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the operation late on Saturday and each participating jet returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced jihadist rule over significant areas in Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike underscores British leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eliminate any revival of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the minister said.

RAF aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted comeback" of Islamic State after its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank all the members of British forces who took part in this mission for their professionalism and their bravery," he said. "They were among numerous British troops stationed over the festive period. This action, to take out terrorist threats who endanger our security, shows how UK forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security domestically and strong abroad."

In December, the US military executed what it described as a "large-scale strike" against Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an assault resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN reports Daesh still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in both countries.
