In a significant move ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the wake of widespread and deadly young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the sitting government.
A Commitment to Address Youth Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which led to considerable loss of life.
"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the deal was signed.
The September revolt was sparked by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Terms of the New Electoral Partnership
According to the official pact, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political class. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in setting up the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.
Broader Political Discussions Underway
In a separate development, the current interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with several leading political figures. These discussions included former prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the uprising.
After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a credible election is a shared duty. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and fear-free environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
