Paris Saint-Germain Edges Marseille in a Shootout to Claim French Season-Opening Trophy in the Middle East.

Trophy celebration scene

PSG has now claimed the season-opening cup on 14 separate occasions.

Paris Saint-Germain needed a dramatic equaliser followed by a perfect spot-kick decider to get past Marseille in Kuwait and secure a fourth straight Trophee des Champions title.

The Champions League holders seemed to be sailing towards a comfortable triumph in the match between the French league champions and the Coupe de France winners after the French winger opened the scoring early on.

However, the southern French side fired two times late to seize a shock advantage. First, Mason Greenwood scored from the spot-kick, before Willian Pacho unfortunately turned the ball into his own net for an own-goal.

In a breathtaking twist of events, Goncalo Ramos grabbed a vital equaliser in the final moments to send the match into a penalty shootout. PSG goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier then stood as the key figure, stopping crucial kicks from O'Riley and Hamed Traore.

In the shootout, Goncalo Ramos, the midfielder, Nuno Mendes, and Desire Doue all converted successfully for PSG to complete a 4-1 penalty win.

Now 14-time champions Paris Saint-Germain, who met last season's Ligue 1 runners-up Marseille after completing a domestic double, have now lifted this trophy for the 12th time in the last thirteen seasons.
