Trial and Implementation

The new functionality is being tested over the following weeks before a global rollout. This shift aligns with a rise in content created by AI, spurred by new video-generation tools.

The Broader AI Trend

Recent reports that approximately 10% of the most rapidly expanding content creators on a competing service primarily display clips produced artificially. A considerable share of this content is deemed “AI slop”, a term for poor-quality, factory-style content that is typically illogical or surreal.

“We know from our community that numerous viewers enjoy content made with AI tools, ranging from AI artwork to informative clips, and we intend to provide users the option to adjust the amount of that, according to their own preferences,” commented a platform representative.

AI on the Platform

TikTok shared that there are now 1.3bn videos on its network identified as made with AI. In total, over 100 m pieces of content are uploaded to the app each day, making AI content a minor portion of its overall inventory.

User Control Features

Members will be capable of limit or boost the amount of artificial media they watch by opening the “manage topic” setting in the application and choosing AI-made media. Further subjects that currently be adjusted under the tool include current affairs, fashion, beauty, and movement.

AI Disclosure Rules

The platform’s guidelines mandate content makers to identify lifelike artificially created content, and it forbids dangerous deepfakes of well-known individuals or critical incidents. Any realistic artificial content that is unmarked can be taken down under its user guidelines.

In addition, the app will henceforth attach an artificially created tag to content produced via its own AI tools, or identified by an industry-wide initiative for recognizing content made by AI. This measure is aimed to deter users from trying to bypass the labeling process.

Educational Initiatives

TikTok is furthermore introducing a $2 million AI literacy fund for specialists and groups to create learning resources about ethical AI use. This project will benefit charitable organizations focused on training coding and technology.

Moderation Strategy

TikTok has defended its moderation strategy, during controversy over intentions to cut jobs for numerous safety staff in Britain. It is planning to cut a significant number of roles in its content moderation team in its British office, with worker representatives and digital protection specialists raising concerns that humans are being replaced by AI moderation.

A company official clarified that staff-based oversight would remain essential, but artificial intelligence can shield workers by removing the most graphic content ahead of it gets reviewed by humans. The company reported a notable drop in explicit and harmful content handled by human moderators over the last 12 months due to reliance on its AI tools.

It is vital to balance humans and technology to maintain a secure environment,” the official commented. “We’ll have humans as involved in the system, but we also think it’s extremely critical to minimize viewing of unsafe media as quickly as possible, which is where a significant AI assistance is proving valuable work at speed.”
